Mission, Objectives & Goals

Mission:

Our mission is to reaffirm the legal definition of marriage as the union of one man and one woman through scholarly, legal and educational work.

Objectives and Goals:

A. Generate scholarly resources to make the case for marriage as a man and a woman.

Goal: Develop and argue a positive scholarly approach to marriage.

1. Create a network of scholars supportive of marriage

2. Hold or co-sponsor conferences to generate publications

3. Publish ourselves where our expertise is most useful

B. Make the case through lawyers for marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

Goal: Serve as a national legal back-up team for efforts to reaffirm marriage.

1. Research and prepare memoranda on state, national and international issues, and make these available to a national network of attorneys.

2. Work closely with key States facing challenges, by helping supportive coalitions to strategize, prepare legal documents, and respond to crises.

3. Publicly participate, when necessary, in filing briefs, participating in debates, and gathering and issuing statements in the name of the MLP.

C. Communicate the case for reaffirming marriage to influential members of the public.

Goal: Assist citizens to understand and make the case for reaffirming marriage.

1. Produce informational resources on our website the public can use.

2. Write pieces/speak in general media outlets, to provide a respected voice in countering liberal bias in reporting and arguments about the debate.

3. Write pieces/speak to sympathetic media and groups, both religious and secular, informing and encouraging citizens to help reaffirm marriage.

D. Address related legal issues that appear friendly or hostile to reaffirming marriage.

Goal: Track trends related to reaffirming marriage, helping allies when possible.

1. Monitor adoption, same-sex unions, and “sexuality”-related issues, within law and other professions, and in important scholarly groups and journals.

2. Assist where possible in supporting marriage-friendly policies and opposing marriage-hostile ones (e.g. supporting the Boy Scouts).

3. Advise state and national networks struggling with specific dilemmas.
