Nebraska Marriage Amendment

Initiative Measure 416

On November 7, 2000, the people of Nebraska overwhelmingly ratified Initiative Measure 416, an amendment to the Nebraska Constitution which reads:

Only marriage between a man and a woman shall be valid or recognized in Nebraska . The uniting of two persons of the same sex in a civil union, domestic partnership, or other similar same-sex relationship shall not be valid or recognized in Nebraska.

The amendment passed by a 70.1% to 29.9% margin, with 477571 votes in favor and 203667 opposed. The measure received majority approval in each of the state's 93 counties.
